Vancouver
Vancouver companies trust Pickr for recruiting intelligence
Pickr gives recruitment agencies and in-house hiring teams in Vancouver a scored shortlist in minutes, structured interviews for every role, and match reasoning you can put in front of a client or a hiring manager in another time zone.
Vancouver hires across more industries than its postcard suggests. Technology runs from Gastown and Yaletown out to Burnaby and Richmond: homegrown software companies, the Vancouver engineering offices of large US technology firms, and a dense cluster of video-game, visual-effects and animation studios that all want the same engineers, artists and product people. Film and television production sits next to that cluster and draws on the same technical crews. Downtown, the head offices of mining, forestry and energy companies hire geologists, engineers and finance staff for operations across British Columbia and abroad. Life sciences and clean tech grow out of the universities, the port and its logistics operators run around the clock, and the health authorities, universities and hospitality groups hire all year.
That is what makes hiring in Vancouver hard. The talent pool is international and well educated, but the cost of living makes candidates weigh every offer carefully, and the best engineers compare local pay with what Seattle and the Bay Area pay, in the same time zone, often for remote roles they can take without moving. Several US companies opened Vancouver offices precisely to hire people who could not get a US visa, so the local pool is contested by employers with deep pockets. Visas and relocation are part of nearly every senior search: many technical hires arrive from abroad or from elsewhere in Canada, which puts start dates, credential checks and clear communication on the critical path. Employers that move fast and explain their decisions win. Those that leave candidates waiting lose them to the next offer.
Market snapshot
Hiring in Vancouver at a glance
- Key sectors
- Technology and software, video games, visual effects and animation, film and television production, mining and forestry head offices, clean tech, life sciences, port logistics and trade, tourism and hospitality, healthcare and higher education.
- Typical employers
- Vancouver engineering offices of large US technology companies, homegrown scaleups, game and animation studios, production companies, resource-company head offices, port and logistics operators, provincial health authorities, universities, hotel and restaurant groups.
- Talent pool
- International and well educated: graduates from UBC, SFU and BCIT, newcomers arriving through Canada's skilled-worker visa programs, and experienced people relocating from across Canada and the Asia-Pacific region. Close ties to the Seattle and Bay Area technology scenes.
- Languages of business
- English. Mandarin, Cantonese and Punjabi are widely spoken and valued in customer-facing and Asia-Pacific roles. French matters for federal and national roles more than for local ones.
- Hiring dynamics
- Competitive for engineering, product and creative talent, with US employers paying US salaries for Pacific-time remote roles. Agencies specialize by sector: tech, resources, finance, executive search. Contingency dominates mid-level hiring, retained search covers executive and resource-sector leadership.
- Remote and relocation
- Hybrid is the norm in tech and professional services. Relocation from abroad is common and visa timelines shape start dates. The Pacific time zone makes cross-border teams with Seattle and California easy, while East Coast and European collaboration is a scheduling exercise.
How Pickr helps
What Vancouver teams get with Pickr
A scored shortlist while the candidate is still on the market
Describe the role. Pickr finds and scores candidates from your own talent pool and beyond in minutes, with reasoning attached to every match. Related skills count, so a rendering engineer from a visual-effects studio is not filtered out of a game-studio search for lacking the exact tool name. In a city where a strong engineer has a Seattle offer in hand within the week, the shortlist that lands first is the one that gets the hire.
Match reasoning that survives the time-zone gap
Every score comes with an explanation in plain sentences: what fits, what is missing, what to probe in the interview. Agencies send it to the client with the submission; in-house teams use it to get a hiring manager in Toronto or Seattle to a decision without a meeting. Every completed placement makes the next shortlist for that role sharper, so your accuracy on the profiles you place most improves over time.
Structured interviews for panels spread across offices
Each role gets tailored interview questions, live transcription and scorecards that write themselves, so a panel split between Vancouver, a US head office and a remote interviewer evaluates against the same criteria. Interviewer and hiring-manager seats are free. For agencies, clients review candidates, vote and leave feedback in their own portal, free and with no user limit, which ends the CV email chain.
Less admin, more conversations
Follow-ups, scheduling, rejections and status updates are drafted for you; you review and send. Email, calendar, Slack, WhatsApp and LinkedIn conversations land in one inbox against the right candidate. If you prefer, connect Claude or ChatGPT via MCP and run the pipeline from a chat window. Your afternoon goes back to candidates and clients instead of copying between tools.
EU-hosted in Germany
Candidate data and the application itself run in Frankfurt, Germany, inside the EU. Pickr is GDPR compliant, a data processing agreement (DPA) is included, and names and email addresses are redacted from AI prompts by default. For a Vancouver agency or hiring team that is a clear answer in any client or vendor privacy review, and it matters when you place EU candidates or work for EU clients: their data stays in the EU. The product works anywhere in the world with an English interface. Built in Austria by a founder who ran a recruitment agency himself.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is Pickr available in Vancouver?
Yes. Pickr is a cloud application and is available to companies and recruitment agencies in Vancouver and across British Columbia with nothing to install. You, your clients and your interviewers work in the browser. The interface, demo, onboarding and support are in English. Pricing is on request; the quickest way to get it is to book a demo.
Where is candidate data stored?
Candidate data and the application run in Frankfurt, Germany, inside the EU. Pickr is GDPR compliant, a data processing agreement under Art. 28 GDPR is included, and personal data such as names and email addresses is redacted from AI prompts by default. For a Canadian company that means candidate data sits in the EU rather than in the US, and if you want AI processing to stay entirely within the EU, that is a single setting.
Does Pickr work for recruitment agencies in Vancouver?
Yes. Pickr was built by a founder who ran a recruitment agency himself. Clients, mandates, submissions and placements are part of the product, not tags bolted onto an in-house tool. You run several client pipelines side by side, your clients review candidates in a free portal, and every shortlist comes with reasoning you can send with the submission. It suits contingency, retained and hybrid models.
Which languages does Pickr support?
The interface is available in English and German. Candidate data, CVs and notes can be in any language, so a Vancouver team can work with Mandarin, Punjabi, French or Spanish CVs in the same pipeline as English ones, and candidates are scored against the same role requirements regardless of the language they applied in.
Can we import our existing ATS or CRM data?
Yes. One-click import from Ashby, Greenhouse, Lever and Bullhorn, or CSV from any other system. Past applications, talent pools and notes are searchable and scored from day one, so your first search on Pickr does not start from an empty database.
Does Pickr work for in-house hiring teams in Vancouver?
Yes. In-house teams at software companies, studios, resource companies and health organizations use the same scored shortlist, structured interviews and automatic follow-ups. Hiring managers and interviewers join on free seats wherever they sit, and feedback lands where the decision is made instead of in an email thread across three time zones.
