Ashby Alternatives 2026: 5 Options for Companies That Want More Than an ATS

The five strongest Ashby alternatives for in-house hiring teams in 2026: Pickr, Greenhouse, Lever, Workable and Recruitee, compared honestly.

Andreas Amann

The five strongest Ashby alternatives for in-house hiring teams in 2026 are Pickr, Greenhouse, Lever, Workable and Recruitee. Pickr is the one to look at if you want recruiting intelligence that compounds across hires rather than a better-designed record system. Greenhouse is for auditable process at scale, Lever for sourcing-heavy teams, Workable for speed, Recruitee for collaborative hiring in the mid-market.

I built Pickr, so discount that section accordingly. I also used Ashby for real hiring before I built anything, which is why this article starts with what Ashby gets right.

This list is for companies hiring for themselves. Pickr serves in-house teams and recruitment agencies alike, but the agency evaluation asks different questions — client data isolation, client portals, placement tracking, cross-client matching — so if that is you, read the agency-focused Ashby alternatives comparison instead.

Ashby is a good product. Start there.

Ashby's analytics are the strongest in the category, and I say that as a competitor. The custom report builder, funnel visualisation and source attribution go deeper than anything else on this list. Scheduling automation is excellent, structured interview kits are well designed, and the product is fast in a way that most enterprise recruiting software is not.

If your team is a growth-stage tech company with a dedicated recruiting operations person, Ashby is a genuinely strong choice and switching for the sake of switching will cost you three months. If your real problem is that nobody configured Ashby properly, no alternative on this list fixes that.

Four honest reasons companies outgrow Ashby

Cost tracks your headcount, not your hiring

Ashby's own pricing page lists the entry Foundations plan at $400 per month at the time of writing, and the model scales with company size. That means you can grow from 80 employees to 200 while hiring the same 30 people a year, and your recruiting software bill moves anyway. For a company in a hiring-flat year, paying more because the engineering team grew is a hard line item to defend.

The analytics that sold you are on the tier above

The full analytics capability sits above the entry plan, on a tier that is quote-only and comes with a sales call. Most teams evaluate on Foundations. That means the capability you are buying the product for is often not the capability you tested during the trial, and the real number arrives after you have already migrated.

US-first data residency

Ashby is a US company with a US-first data footprint. If you have a works council, a data protection officer, or a customer contract that constrains where personal data is processed, that turns into a recurring conversation. Ask any vendor three questions in writing: where the primary copy of candidate data lives, where AI prompts are processed, and which sub-processors touch the data. The GDPR-compliant recruiting software checklist covers what a defensible answer looks like.

Per-seat pricing keeps interviewers out of the system

This is the one that quietly costs the most. When every login has a price, companies buy seats for recruiters and leave hiring managers and interviewers outside. Feedback then arrives in email threads and Slack messages, scorecards get written from memory three days after the interview, and the evaluation data your reporting depends on is thin by construction. It is not a licensing detail. It determines whether structured hiring actually happens, which is why free seats for interviewers and hiring managers are a product decision rather than a discount.

The five alternatives

1. Pickr — for teams that want the system to get better at hiring

Pickr is the AI-native recruiting platform that evaluates candidates on evidence of skills rather than keyword matches, and feeds what happened to the people you actually hired back into how the next candidates are scored. That is the difference from every other product on this list: the others store your hiring history, Pickr uses it.

In practice: every candidate is parsed and scored against the role's real requirements continuously, including adjacent and transferable skills rather than exact keyword presence. Interviews are transcribed and scorecards arrive pre-filled with evidence mapped to each criterion, so the interviewer edits rather than writes. When someone rejects a strong candidate without documented reasoning, Pickr challenges the decision at the moment it is made, while the reasoning is still in the room.

Interviewers and hiring managers are never charged per seat, so they are in the system rather than in a mail thread. Candidate data is hosted in Germany (Frankfurt), the product is built in Austria, a data processing agreement is included, and personally identifying information is redacted from AI prompts by default.

Do not pick Pickr if your decisive requirement is a custom report builder; Ashby is still ahead there. Nor if your bottleneck is raw job-board distribution volume, which is Workable's territory.

2. Greenhouse — for auditable process at enterprise scale

Greenhouse is excellent at exactly what it claims: structured, auditable hiring across a large organisation. Approval chains, scorecard discipline, interview kits, permission granularity and one of the largest integration ecosystems in the category. If your recruiting function has to survive an audit or a compliance review, this is the safest answer on the list.

The trade is administration. Greenhouse rewards a dedicated recruiting operations owner and punishes teams without one, configuration is a project rather than an afternoon, and its AI capability is additive to a traditional core rather than woven into evaluation. Pricing is quote-only and banded by employee count, so it carries the same headcount-linked shape you may be leaving Ashby to escape.

3. Lever — for teams that source more than they post

Lever's genuine strength is running candidate relationship management and applicant tracking as one system rather than two that sync. Nurture campaigns, talent pools and inbound applications live in the same place, so a candidate you approached 14 months ago is not in a separate tool from the candidate who applied yesterday. For teams where most hires come from outbound sourcing rather than job ads, that is worth more than reporting depth.

Lever is now part of the Employ group alongside Jobvite and JazzHR. That is not a problem in itself, but ask for roadmap commitments in writing before you sign a multi-year term.

4. Workable — for getting live this week

Workable's strength is speed and distribution. One-click posting to a large set of job boards, sensible defaults, and a setup you can complete without a project plan. For a company hiring under about 50 people a year with no recruiting operations headcount, it is the lowest-friction option here and the published pricing tiers mean you can budget without a sales call.

The ceiling is evaluation depth. Structured scoring, interview evidence and reporting are adequate rather than strong, so teams that professionalise their hiring process tend to outgrow it in two to three years.

5. Recruitee — for collaborative mid-market hiring in Europe

Recruitee is built around getting hiring managers to participate: readable pipelines, light-touch collaboration, and an interface non-recruiters do not need training for. It is headquartered in the Netherlands, which makes it the other genuinely European option on this list and an easier conversation with a European data protection officer than a US-first vendor.

The trade is depth. Analytics and AI capability are shallower than Ashby's or Pickr's, so it fits teams whose problem is participation rather than evaluation quality.

How to run this evaluation in two weeks

  1. Get your own numbers before you look at any demo. Take the free recruiting process audit: eight questions, about two minutes, no signup. Or connect your existing system read-only and get funnel drop-off stage by stage, scorecard compliance, and which stages run slower than comparable teams. Buying software before you know which stage leaks is how teams end up switching twice.
  2. Demo with your own last five requisitions, not the vendor's sample data. Ask each vendor to show what happens after the interview, not before it.
  3. Price the whole thing at next year's headcount, including add-ons, analytics tier, and a seat for every interviewer.
  4. Send the residency questions in writing and keep the answers.

If you want a wider field than the five here, the 2026 recruiting software comparison covers the full set including options built for agencies.

The decision is narrower than it looks. If reporting depth is the thing you cannot give up, stay on Ashby and buy the right tier. If your problem is that hiring managers are outside the system and every hire starts from zero knowledge, none of the traditional alternatives fix that, because they are all record systems with AI attached. That is the gap Pickr was built for, and the honest way to test the claim is to point it at hiring you have already done.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best Ashby alternatives for companies in 2026?

The five strongest alternatives for in-house hiring teams are Pickr, Greenhouse, Lever, Workable and Recruitee. Pickr suits teams that want recruiting intelligence which compounds across hires and EU hosting; Greenhouse suits large organisations that need auditable process and approval chains; Lever suits sourcing-heavy teams; Workable suits small teams that need to be live this week; Recruitee suits mid-market teams in Europe who want hiring managers involved without heavy administration.

Why do in-house teams switch away from Ashby?

The four reasons that come up most often are cost that tracks company headcount rather than hiring volume, analytics depth that sits on a higher tier than the one most teams buy, US-first data residency that is hard to defend to a European works council or data protection officer, and per-seat pricing that keeps interviewers and hiring managers out of the system entirely. None of these are product defects. They are structural fits that stop matching as a company changes shape.

Which Ashby alternative has the best EU data residency?

Pickr hosts candidate data in Germany (Frankfurt), is built in Austria, includes a data processing agreement, and redacts personally identifying information from AI prompts by default. Recruitee is headquartered in the Netherlands and is the other genuinely European option on this list. For every other vendor, ask in writing where the primary copy of candidate data lives, where AI prompts are processed, and which sub-processors touch the data.

Is Ashby still the best ATS for analytics?

For custom report building and funnel analysis, Ashby's analytics remain the deepest in the category and that is a genuine reason to stay. The caveat is that the full analytics capability sits on a higher tier than the published entry plan, so teams evaluating on the entry tier are not seeing the feature they are buying the product for. If reporting depth is your single decisive requirement, staying with Ashby on the right tier is a defensible answer.

I run a recruitment agency on Ashby. Is this the right list?

No. This comparison is written for in-house talent teams hiring for their own company. Agencies have different structural requirements, including client data isolation, client portals, placement tracking and cross-client candidate matching, and there is a separate agency-focused comparison of Ashby alternatives that covers them.
